hemscott.net with Windows NT4 Dial-Up Networking - CHAP login

Windows NT comes with Internet access software and can be set up to use a hemscott.net account, connecting via a modem.

Please note : Although the information given here is believed to be correct we cannot directly support the use of any other software except that provided with your hemscott.net connection.

If your machine is connected to a local area network, check with the system administrator before continuing with these instructions.

Configuration

The following explains how to set up Windows NT to use a hemscott.net account. It is taken from user reports and has been used successfully by us.

Essential components

  1. hemscott.net account details
  2. Windows NT V4.0 workstation or server installation CD-ROM
  3. Correctly installed modem

First Steps - the infrastructure

Ensure that that Dial-Up Networking has been installed.
  1. Double click My Computer
  2. Double click the Dial-Up Networking icon and click Install to start the installation. If Dial-Up Networking is already installed you can move on to the Setting up a dial up connection paragraph
  3. You will be prompted to insert the installation CD-ROM to copy the necessary files.
  4. When complete, a prompt will appear to add a RAS device (modem) if none are already installed
  5. Click Yes
  6. Windows NT will then try and automatically detect your modem
  7. Follow the prompts to complete modem installation. When complete an Add RAS Device window will appear, choose the correct adapter from the RAS capable devices drop down box
  8. Click Configure and choose Dial out only
  9. Click Network and choose TCP/IP, all other protocols can be unchecked
  10. Then click Continue on the Remote Access Setup box if no network protocols are installed choose TCP/IP and click Continue again.
  11. Windows NT will then install TCP/IP Support
  12. Finally you will be prompted to restart the machine
If you are not prompted for this information then you can manually add the components:
  1. Click on the Network icon in Control Panel
  2. Click the Services tab
  3. Highlight Remote Access Service
  4. Click Add...
  5. Add Remote Access Service
  6. When complete a prompt will appear to add a RAS device (modem) if none are already installed
  7. Click Yes
  8. Windows NT will then try and automatically detect your modem
  9. Follow the prompts to complete modem installation
  10. If no network protocols are available Windows NT will prompt you to add one, select TCP/IP and click continue
  11. Windows NT will then install TCP/IP Support
  12. Finally you may be prompted to restart the machine
To manually add another modem, click Add.. on the Remote Access Setup and then choose Install Modem... or use the Modems icon in the Control Panel

Setting up a dial up connection

  1. Double click My Computer
  2. Double click the Dial-Up Networking icon
  3. The New Phonebook Entry Wizard box will appear
  4. Choose a name hemscott.net , click Next
  5. Check I am calling the Internet
  6. Uncheck Send my plain text password if that's the only way to connect
  7. Uncheck The non-Windows NT server I am calling expects me to type login information after connecting, or to know TCP/IP addresses before dialing
  8. Click Next
  9. Use the corresponding Point of Presence telephone number (supporting CHAP) for local rate call, PoP numbers
  10. Click Next
  11. Click Finish and then Dial-Up Networking window will appear

Setting the TCP/IP Properties

  1. Open the My Computer icon from the desktop
  2. Double click the Dial-Up Networking icon
  3. Select hemscott.net from the Phonebook entry to dial: drop down menu and click More then select Edit entry and modem properties
  4. Click the Basic tab
  5. Click Configure - Set the Initial Speed to 115200
  6. Check Enable hardware flow control
  7. Check Enable modem error control
  8. Check Enable modem error compression
  9. Click the Server tab
  10. In the Network protocols:
    • Check TCP/IP
    • Uncheck IPX/SPX Compatible
    • Uncheck NetBEUI
  11. Then click TCP/IP Settings...
    • Check Server assigned IP addresses
    • Check Server assigned name server addresses
    • Check Use IP header compression
    • Check Use Default Gateway on Remote Network Note: important check
    • Click OK
  12. Check Enable software compression
  13. Uncheck Enable PPP LCP extensions
  14. Click OK to finish the edits

Using your Dial Up Connection

  1. Open the My Computer icon from the desktop
  2. Double click the Dial-Up Networking icon
  3. Select the correct entry from the Phonebook entry to dial: drop down menu
  4. Ensure the telephone number is correct
  5. Click Dial
  6. A Connect to hemscott.net window will appear, in the User Name box, type your hemscott.net username (for example, hemxxx99@hemscott.net )
  7. In the Password box, enter your hemscott.net password.
  8. Ignore the Domain field if blank or remove any default entry
  9. Click OK
  10. The Connect Complete box will appear, stating:

    You have successfully connected to the remote server. You
    may now use the usual Windows NT programs and utilities
    as if you were directly connected to the network.
    
    Right-click the Dial-Up Networking Monitor on the
    task bar to hang up or check the status of your
    connection.
    
    The 'Close on dial' option hides the phonebook
    while dialing and closes it as soon as you connect.
    
  11. You can now run WINSOCK compatible programs, such as Internet Explorer
  12. To break the connection right click on the Dial-Up Networking Monitor in the TaskBar and choose Hang up - hemscott.net

Trouble shooting

  • The first place to visit when trouble shooting Dial-Up Networking is the Microsoft Knowledge Base where you can search for information on any Microsoft product.
  • Service Packs can help certain problems with networking and NT in general, read the documentation carefully, Microsoft Service Packs
  • After you install Service Pack 2 for Windows NT 4.0, you may not be able to ping or otherwise make use of the connection you have established with an ISP when using RAS to dial out. Read this Microsoft Knowledge Base document, Q161368 Note Service Pack 3 is now available.
  • Multiple ISP connections - multiple connections should be possible by creating additional connections in the Dial-Up Networking icon and completing the relevant telephone numbers and server settings
  • To stop the line error sound alerts, Open the Dial-Up Networking Monitor, Click the Preferences tab and Uncheck When a line error occurs
  • If any protocol related connection errors occur, open Networking icon in the Control Panel, and click the Bindings tab. Check that Remote Access Service is bound to WINS Client(TCP/IP) which is then bound to the Remote Access WAN Wrapper
  • The default TCP/IP Properties should be sufficient in most cases. You can enter hemscott.net network settings directly connection:
    • Open the My Computer icon from the desktop
    • Double click the Dial-Up Networking icon
    • Select hemscott.net from the Phonebook entry to dial: drop down menu and click More then select Edit entry and modem properties
    • Click the Server tab
    • Then click TCP/IP Settings...
    • Check Specify name server addresses
    • Enter 158.43.240.4 as the Primary DNS
    • Enter 158.43.240.3 as the Secondary DNS
  • The default modem settings should be sufficient in most cases, however you may wish to check the following points in the Modems icon in the Control Panel.
  • Click the Connection tab
  • Click Connection
    • Data bits: 8
    • Parity: None
    • Stop bits: 1
  • Click Advanced
    • Check Use flow control
    • Check Hardware (RTS/CTS)
