Windows 2000
Windows 2000 comes with Internet access software and should be ready to use with a hemscott.net
account.
If your machine is connected to a local area network, check with the system administrator before continuing with these instructions.
Configuration
The following explains how to set up Windows 2000 to use a hemscott.net
account connecting using CHAP.

First Steps - the infrastructure
Under Windows 2000 Dial Up Networking has been incorporated into the Networking configuration. This is now called Network and Dial-Up Connections and should already have been installed. You can check by doing the following :
- Click on the Start Button
- Move to Settings
- In the Settings menu you should have an entry called
Network and Dial-Up Connections
Creating a new connection is very straight forward. Windows 2000 uses a set of configuration wizards to help you.
To configure a new connection :
- Open the Network and Dial-Up Connections window.
- Double Click the Make New Connection icon.
If this is the first time you have opened this icon you will be presented with a Location Information window which will ask you :
- What Country you are in
- The Area (or city) code you are in
- Whether you need a number for an outside line
- Whether you are using pulse or tone dialling
- When this part is complete click Next
- You will be presented with a selection screen (shown below)
- Choose Dial-up to the Internet
- This will start the Internet Connection Wizard
- Choose I want to set up my Internet Connection Manaually, or I want to connect through a local area network (LAN)
- Click Next
- Choose I connect through a phone line and a modem
- Note that your modem should already have been installed from Add New hardware in Control Panel
Step 1 of 3
- Use the corresponding Point of Presence telephone number for local rate call
- Set the Country/Region as United Kingdom (44)
- Tick the box Use area and dialing rules
- Click Next
Step 2 of 3
- Enter your hemscott.net
username and password,
e.g. hemxxx99@hemscott.net
Step 3 of 3
- Enter a friendly name for your connection, e.g. Connect to hemscott.net
If you haven't already set up your email client (Outlook Express 5) you can do so now as part of the Internet Connection Wizard. If you do not want to set up your email account at this time choose No. You will be able to return here at a later date.

Using your Dial Up Connection
- Double click the new icon in the Network and Dial-Up Connections folder, a Connect to hemscott.net
window will appear, in the User Name box, type your hemscott.net
username (for example, hemxxx99@hemscott.net
)
- In the Password box, enter your hemscott.net
password.
- To check the telephone number and modem settings are correct click Properties
- To connect, click Dial
- A window will appear stating Dialing..., then Verifying username and password... and finally Connected
- You can now run WINSOCK compatible programs, such as Internet Explorer
- To break the connection look for the Dial-Up Connection icon in the system tray.
- Double Click it to bring up the disconnect button.
