Windows 95 Setup

Windows 95 comes with Internet access software and can be set up to use a hemscott.net account.

Please note that although the information given here is believed to be correct we cannot directly support the use of any other software except that provided with your hemscott.net connection.

If your machine is connected to a local area network, check with the system administrator before continuing with these instructions.

Configuration

The following explains how to set up Windows 95 to use a hemscott.net account, connecting using the CHAP protocol.

Essential components

  1. hemscott.net account details
  2. Windows 95 installation disks or CD-ROM
  3. Correctly installed modem

First Steps - the infrastructure

  1. Ensure that Dial-Up Networking has been installed.
    • Double click My Computer
    • Double click Control Panel
    • Double click Add/Remove Programs
    • Select the Windows Setup tab
    • Select Communications
    • Click the Details... button
    • Check the Dial-Up Networking option if its not already checked
    • Click OK
  2. Click on the Network icon in Control Panel. You need to Add a Client, an Adapter and a Protocol.
  3. The Client you add is Microsoft Networks
  4. The Adapter you add is Microsoft Dial-up Adapter
  5. The Protocol you add is Microsoft - select TCP/IP from the list offered. The default IPX/SPX and NetBEUI protocols can be removed if your not using them on a local area network.
  6. You don't need a Service
  7. Windows 95 will need to reboot after any changes

Setting up a dial up connection

  1. Double click My Computer
  2. Double click the new folder called Dial-Up Networking
  3. Double click on Make New Connection
  4. Follow the screens providing information required.
  5. Note that your modem should already have been installed from Add New hardware in Control Panel
  6. Use the corresponding Point of Presence telephone number (supporting CHAP) for local rate call, PoP numbers
  7. When finished, select the new icon and bring up its Properties box (The shortcut is to right click the icon and choose Properties)
  8. Click Configure then General
    • Set the Maximum Speed to 115200
  9. Go to Connection, click on Advanced
    • Tick Use Error Control
    • Tick Compress data
    • Tick Use Flow Control and Hardware
    • Click OK
  10. Click on Server type and select PPP,Windows 95,Windows NT,Internet
  11. In the Advanced options:
    • Uncheck Log on to network
    • Check Enable software compression
    • Uncheck Require encrypted password
  12. In Allowed network protcols:
    • Uncheck NetBEUI
    • Uncheck IPX/SPX Compatible
  13. Then click TCP/IP Settings...
    • Check Server assigned IP addresses
    • Check Server assigned name server addresses
    • Check Use IP header compression
    • Check Use Default Gateway on Remote Network Note: important check
    • Click OK
    • Click OK to finish the required edits

Using your Dial Up Connection

  1. Double click the new icon in the Dial-Up Networking folder, a Connect to hemscott.net window will appear, in the User Name box, type your hemscott.net username (for example, hemxxx99@hemscott.net )
  2. In the Password box, enter your hemscott.net password.
  3. Ensure the telephone number is correct and then click Connect
  4. A window will appear stating Dialing..., then Verifying username and password... and finally Connected
  5. You can now run WINSOCK compatible programs, such as Internet Explorer
  6. To break the connection click on the Disconnect button

Trouble shooting

  • The first place to visit when trouble shooting Dial-Up Networking is the Microsoft Knowledge Base where you can search for information on any Microsoft product, try searching for 'DUN'.

  • After connecting to the Internet, if Netscape displays No DNS or Internet Explorer states Could not open site, follow this Knowledge base document Q153967.

  • Multiple ISP connections - multiple connections should be possible by creating additional connections in the Dial-Up Networking folder and completing the relevant telephone numbers and server settings. The default connection can be chosen by opening the Control Panel and clicking the Internet icon.

  • The default modem settings should be sufficient in most cases, however you may wish to check the following points in the Configure|Connection tab:
    • Data bits: 8
    • Parity: None
    • Stop bits: 1
    • Advanced...
      • Check Use flow control
      • Check Hardware (RTS/CTS)

  • The default Dial-Up Adapter Properties should be sufficient in most cases, however you may wish to check the following points by
    1. Clicking on the Network icon in Control Panel.
    2. Select Dial-Up Adapter and click Properties
    3. Select Bindings and ensure TCP/IP is ticked
    4. Select Advanced, select Use IPX Compression and set Value to No
    5. Click OK

  • The default TCP/IP Properties should be sufficient in most cases. You can enter hemscott.net network settings directly into the Control Panel, although this is not recommended if you are using other Internet connections.
    1. Click on the Network icon in Control Panel.
    2. Select TCP/IP Protocol and click Properties
    3. Select Bindings and ensure Client for Microsoft Networks is ticked
    4. Select DNS, tick Enable DNS, enter your hemscott.net user name in Host and hemscott.net in Domain
    5. Type 158.43.240.4 in DNS server search order and click Add
    6. Type 158.43.240.3 as the second DNS server and click Add
    7. Select IP Address and ensure Obtain an IP address automatically is checked
    8. Select WINS Configuration and check Disable WINS Resolution
    9. No edits are required for Gateway and Advanced
    10. Click OK

Dial-Up Networking improvements
Microsoft has released Dial-Up Networking (DUN) improvements as part of Version 1.3 of Dial-Up Networking.

Improvements include DUN Server (previously available only in Microsoft Plus!), optional automatic connection without confirmation, integrated scripting (and SLIP), and placement of the DUN icon on the Tray rather than the Task Bar. Once installed, the new DUN capabilities can be accessed through My Computer | Dial-Up Networking | Connections | Settings
